What is a community yoga class?
A few worlds away from a studio based yoga class, but still very much yoga!
Community yoga classes are those held in community spaces such as community centres, meetings rooms and other spaces, and are typically donation based or free.
One of the main aims behind community classes are to allow more people to access them. Studio class prices aren't feasible for many, and providing classes on a donation basis helps remove any potential financial barriers for those who want to join.
When I returned to my home town of Wolverhampton after nearly a decade of traveling and living around the world, Gatis Community Space was one of the first places I discovered in my bid to explore the local community scene. I attended a vegan pop up dinner and found out more about all of the activities the space hosted - from breastfeeding support groups to music lessons and tea making workshops, there was so much on offer!
I loved the Gatis ethos of community and connection and in a few weeks Yoga at Gatis was born in the summer of 2018. A weekly session every Tuesday 6:30-7:30pm, the classes were originally held in person at the centre (including outdoors during summer, so lovely!) but since lock down have moved online.
These classes are suitable for anyone interested in starting or developing a yoga practice, and are a wonderful starting point for beginners, or perhaps those a little nervous to attend a studio class (as well as those more accustomed to yoga for whom the time/date is convenient!).
The view from outside - yoga outdoors in the summer was so beautiful, fingers crossed we can do this again in the Gatis garden this year
The sessions are 'pay as you feel' meaning on a donation basis - if you are unable to contribute this is completely fine. Equally those who are able to donate a little more, you are welcome to do so.
The little yoga family of those attending over the years has grown and changed but is always the most wonderful, welcoming and warm diverse collection of people who I feel very lucky to spend my evenings with.
If you would like to join us you are always welcome to attend - you can find the Zoom Link for the classes (which is the same every week) here:
You don't need to book but you will need to download Zoom ahead of time. Wear comfy clothes you can move in and have a yoga mat and any props you have (like yoga blocks or a belt, don't worry if you don't) handy for the class.
If you have any health conditions I need to be aware of or questions please contact me via email: wildwolfmovement@gmail.com or let me know at the beginning of class.
Hope to see you there :)
